Great Oakley is a lively Essex village, home to a nursery, primary school, church, and football club. It also boasts an active local community, who, in recent years, clubbed together to save their local pub from redevelopment. The Maybush Inn is now owned by the community, and is staffed entirely by local volunteers.

The surrounding countryside is picturesque, with residents benefiting from the nearby Hamford Water National Nature Reserve, and Wrabness Nature Reserve. The village is only a short distance from the coast, and residents can take advantage of the seaside towns, Frinton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze, for a day out at the beach. For a variety of amenities and leisure activities, the port of Harwich is 15 minutes drive, while the historic town of Colchester is only half an hour by car.

The payment process for a self or custom built home is different to the purchase of a traditional new build property – which you pay for once it is built.

As your home at Oakley Orchards will be a bespoke design for you and your individual requirements, you will purchase your home at various stages of the build process. BuildStore Mortgage Services are on hand to arrange the most suitable funding option for you. As the UK’s leading self and custom build expert, they have financed over 20,000 building projects for people creating their own home. That is a lot of dreams being made!

Oakley Orchards is a joint venture between local farmer, Pete Thompson and award-winning company, Village Makers.

Pete is a keen conservationist who does all he can to encourage sustainability and to make sure that his farming activities have a positive impact on the local environment, wildlife and community. He sees his involvement in Oakley Orchards as an extension of that on-going ambition.

Village Makers have been designing and building houses since 1993. It’s a company that sets out to build neighbourhoods with neighbourliness at their heart.

An example of this in action is the award-winning eco-village, The Wintles, in Shropshire. Neighbours there have bonded with each other, helping community spirit to thrive.

The founders of Village Makers, Bob Tomlinson, Ian Hollocks and Carole Salmon are still running the company and have over two decades of experience behind them.

Like Pete Thompson, they are determined that Oakley Orchards will have a positive impact on Great Oakley and its local community.
