English Brothers

In 1924 the company marketed pre-fabricated timber framed homes, making it possibly the most established timber frame manufacturer in the UK. That’s a long time to be in business, but in fact the company’s roots date back to 1704!

Today, this award-winning company specialises in designing, manufacturing and building one-off self-build homes from the über-contemporary to traditional oak post and beam designs and everything in between.

At the heart of every home they construct is the timber frame structure; in simple terms this structure forms the backbone of the entire home and encompasses all of the walls (internal and external), insulation, floor joists and floor deck and of course the roof structure. What then goes around the walls (such as bricks, render or timber cladding) or on the roof (tiles, slate or zinc, for example) is purely keeping the weather out – it forms no structural element to the building.

Planning services

As a nationwide firm, we can provide planning advice across the UK via our network of experienced planning consultants who have a thorough understanding of local-level policies. They will help to ensure you get consent for the home you want within the context of any constraints or conditions set by your council.

Architecture & design

The company does not have a range of ‘ready-made’ designs to choose from. Instead, they prefer to provide a full architectural design service which ensures your new home really is yours. Alternatively, you can provide drawings that you have had prepared by your own designer. It’s quite common for the company to provide Building Regulations drawings too – useful if you have inherited a set of drawings with the acquisition of a plot but have no relationship with the architect.

Construction phase

Our mainstay is the supply and erection of your bespoke structural timber frame. These works include thermal and acoustic insulation, fitting joists, laying the floor deck etc – leaving you with a complete structure that includes all internal walls, floors, roof and even built-in wardrobes. We can also build using oak post and beam methods, or our highly-skilled team can seamlessly integrate tailor-made joinery into a modern timber frame structure, such as exposed feature beams, sunrooms and cart-style garages in oak or Douglas fir.

Contract scope

In many cases we can offer a flexible range of on-site services. This can include anything from groundworks and drainage through to roofing, bricklaying, drylining and installation of second-fix joinery items, such as staircases and doors. We also provide fully project-managed services to those clients who prefer to stay in control but not get bogged-down with day-to-day management of the build.

“We’re so proud of our heritage and experience in the timber frame industry, and we want our clients to experience that level of pride in their new home – we always do our utmost to make that happen”
